Looking for cheap Wedding ideas in Australia? Here at Shlimbo we have put together a list of some cheap Wedding Ideas that might help keep your budget under control.
The Reception Venue – this can be the of the most expensive part of the wedding, when you can easily pay $100 per head for catering, which even for 80 guests, suddenly puts an $8000 dent into your budget. But there are some things you can do to help with these costs. Firstly, look at the time of year and day of your Wedding, if you are in high season on a Saturday night then expect to pay top price. But a romantic Winter wedding, where the venue is looking for more bookings, gives you an upper hand in hopefully negotiating a discount. The other option would be to look at a Sunday breakfast or brunch as a less expensive reception idea, however, if they venue was used the night before you will be limited on time for decorating. If you have a theme wedding, such as Medieval or Renaissance style then you can get away with a Spit Roast Caterer for about $20 per head, and it will totally compliment the mood! You can then look at hiring a hall and spending more on decorations, theming, Wedding games and entertainment which means guests will be so busy with all the going on of the night to worry about the food. Send away to the local venue for their Wedding packages, and you will usually find a buffet less expensive than sit down 3 course meal. A marquee can be a great Wedding venue, however, once you add in hire and catering, it doesn't usually work out less expensive than going to a hotel venue. Lastly, a cocktail wedding can also be suitable for a budget Wedding, as usually only hors d'eouvres are served and can be a more casual atmosphere.
Wedding Dress – Firstly you have to establish the style of wedding dress that suits you and is what you are wanting. I would highly recommend keeping an eye out on Ebay, a friend of mine who wanted a strapless, ruched at the side style of princess gown found what she wanted for about $1600 in a shop. We found a very similar style for $300 on Ebay (had been over $2000 new), it had more beading on it and was even more beautiful than the one in the shop. Once word of advise check the measurements, and if possible go for "slightly" bigger to your size and then take it to a reputable clothing alteration shop to take it in for you. If you find a dress you like on Ebay, before you purchase it, get at least the bust, waist, hips and length of skirt (especially if you are tall) and take the pictures and the measurements to the clothing alteration shop and ask their opinion first, so they can measure you and check that altering of the Wedding gown can be done. The other alternative is to look at evening wear as compared the wedding dresses, as you can get some beautiful styles not necessarily in the higher end bridal prices. I had my dress made because I couldn't find what I wanted in the shops (probably because it was Red!), and spent a day and a half gluing on over 2000 Swarovski crystals, which helped in reducing labour costs.
Centrepieces - rose petals are available in bulk from florists and a few market sellers, sprinkling multitudes of these in the center of your table with tea light candles is extremely effective. Market flower sellers are usually the growers and if you talk with them beforehand about buying bulk flowers, and enlist some friends that may help you put them together on the day. You may also like to hire tall vases, or glass bowls and immerse the flowers underwater with fishing sinkers and rubber bands with stones in the bottom and put floating candles in the top. You just need a few colourful flowers or sprays so that it is effective. In case your wedding colours are green or red, apples produce a great centrepiece and you can cut the tops out and put tea light candles inside. If you want height speak to a plant hire place about hiring topiary or ficus plants to put on the tables. From the leaves you can tie hanging glass candles, ribbons with notes of love sayings, or find some good battery powered fairy lights and wind them within the leaves. If you've got time on your side have a look at Christmas Decorations as not every ornament necessarily seems like a Christmas decoration away from season, and Boxing day sales are a great time for you to get fairy lights, ornaments, votive holders and occasionally swags of garlands etc. at the hugely adjusted price (also subscribe to the dedicated Xmas shops that sell online as they frequently have big sales with cheap shipping following the Christmas season). As an example, I picked up battery operated fairy lights for $2.95 down from $15.00, along with a 3mtr long plain pine garland for $17.00 down from $59.00.
Engagement ring - this can be an easy item to spend big on as you see it everyday and it reminds you of your special day. Try some local independent jewellers that can make a custom design, perhaps with a unique filigree design in gold together with your initials, Monogram style. Estate jewellery is usually an option while assured of a more unique piece of quality, instead of a standard solitaire. The best sale times of the season for diamond rings are Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and before Christmas. Obviously should you decide you want the large "bling", consider cubic zirconia's with a white or gold band, including those from Secrets Jewellery as you can aquire a 1ct solitaire for just $500, and a 2ct for less than $600, it will fit the bill and last just as long if you care for it like you would normally. You can always get the coveted pale blue box down the track! One word of advise - a cluster of smaller "diamonds" has a tendency to look more authentic compared to a large stone
General money saving ideas – Have you got a friend who has a great verandah or back yard? This can be the perfect place to hold a Wedding, some local parks even allow you to reserve areas for a low cost fee. Look at your guest list and only invite people who are really important to you, if you haven't seen or heard from Aunt Mavis since you were 10, you might ruffle some feathers, but all Wedding's tend to do that anyway! Bomboneire can be made by yourself quite some time in advance, buy doing organza bags of flower seeds, votive candles or chocolate foil hearts can be quite inexpensive.
You can DIY a few of your wedding ideas, and the savings may be considerable. We recommend that you have as much time as possible to organise you day, so you can be on the lookout for bargains at different points during the year.
